Dating from 1846 and designed by Jesse Hartley, the Albert Dock in Liverpool was the first warehouse in the world to be built entirely from non-combustible materials - cast iron, brick, stone and concrete with no structural timber. It was also designed so that goods could be loaded directly to and from the ships and the warehouse.
